Why Natural Baby Care Products Are Essential

Pick up any baby skincare product straight off a shelf at a store, and it will most likely contain certain ingredients that might lead to allergies or specific health effects. It is one thing to use off-the-shelf skincare products on our bodies, but it is a whole different matter altogether for baby skincare products. Babies’ tiny bodies do not detoxify as efficiently as adults. Hence, not using organic and natural baby products might lead to a more severe effect on their body.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the essential baby skincare products that I should get?

As a general rule of thumb, less is often better for babies, especially for skin care. Babies' skin is highly sensitive. You might also want to read carefully the ingredients of the products you choose, especially for new-borns.

Below are the basic baby skincare products we recommend:

  • Gentle & fragrance-free body wash
  • Mild moisturiser or lotion
  • Fragrance-free nappy rash cream
  • Fragrance-free baby sunscreen (recommended for 6 months and above)

All of the above products are available under our WotNot Naturals range from Australia. As we know our WotNot baby products are safe for your baby, you can have a peace of mind using them. Our WotNot baby sunscreen is also safe for babies 3 months and above.

Why should I ensure the baby care products is fragrance-free?

Baby skin is highly delicate and more susceptible to irritants than older children and adults due to the lack of a well-developed skin barrier, resulting in their skin being unable to maintain moisture. Some fragrances are made of chemicals which may further irritate their skin, causing rashes, redness and itchiness. This may happen for babies with normal skin, and more so for babies with eczema-prone or easily irritated skin. Our WotNot baby products only derive fragrances from its natural ingredients such as Chamomile, Aloe Vera, Jojoba, or other natural flower and seed oils.

How to treat baby eczema?

One way to help with eczema is to moisturise after bath. For bath, use just a few drops of a mild cleanser, such as Wotnot Naturals 3-in-1 baby wash and warm water. Once done, gently pat dry and apply a baby lotion, like our Wotnot Naturals 100% natural baby lotion, which moisturises and hydrates simultaneously. Apply at least once a day. Many body wash products contain sulphates which cause foam, however, our WotNot products do not contain sulphates and thus do not feel “soapy”.

At What age should we start using sunscreen on our newborn, and is it safe?

Ideally, you would want to introduce sunscreen to your baby once they are at least six months old. Babies under that age should avoid direct sunlight. Sun protection also includes dressing them in lightweight, breathable sun-protective clothing covering their legs and arms if needed. Once 6 months old, you can apply a thin layer of sunscreen. Our WotNot baby sunscreen is suitable from 3 months old.

Are baby lotions compulsory, and why should I go organic?

Baby lotions are recommended. Caring for your new-born is a crucial priority for many first-time mums. New-borns’ skin is delicate and vulnerable to dryness and irritation. Thus we recommend applying a thin layer of lotion or moisturizer after bath to lock in moisture, as moisturising lotions are recommended to help replenish any loss of their natural skin oils. Organic lotions are free of harmful chemicals and ingredients. We only want the best for our children, thus at LoveNaturall, we advocate using only premium, natural and organic ingredients in our baby products.

What toxic ingredients should I look out for in baby care products?

Many everyday baby care products, such as lotions, shampoos, shower gels, and sunscreens, contain ingredients that may not be as harmful to older children and adults as to babies. Thankfully, most of our products are incredibly baby-friendly. You should look out for common ingredients when purchasing such products: DEA, glycol, propylene, sulphates, colorants and parabens. These chemicals aggravate the skin unnecessarily and might cause eczema. Of course, diet, environmental or genetic factors cause skin irritation but where possible, we can consciously choose cleaner products for our children. With WotNot Naturals, we only create safe products that are tested rigorously under Australian standards, and our products are certified organic, vegan-friendly and gluten-free.

How do I know which brand to choose from that is best for my baby

Not all baby skincare products are well-suited for every baby. Many mothers ‘trial and error’ with many different types of products on their babies which might even cause more skin irritation and allergies. Further, with many baby care products in the market, each with its benefits, design and (artificial) fragrance, it can be overwhelming for a new mother to choose ones that have specifically formulated their products for babies' safety and health. Hence, if you are not sure, do seek a professional opinion from your baby's paediatrician or doctor.

What is the importance of fragrance-free?

Fragrances can be in the form of natural ingredients or chemically-created. If naturally derived from natural ingredients such as seed oils or flower oils, we are sure that these are safe for our babies. But if these are additional chemicals to create artificial fragrances, then these chemicals are unneccessary on babies' skins. While fragrance might be a natural tendency to many to choose certain products ovet the others, we recommend either fragrance-free or fragrances that are derived from natural ingredients for our babies.
